"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Moonrise?

if
peace
had
an
address.

it
would
be
somewhere
between
the moon
&
the trees.

There are always more questions than answers.

We had a delightful dinner with Dana and Anne last evening at their Portland condo overlooking Casco Bay. We were able to watch the slightly waining full moon rise over the bay....and we could actually see it move. Or could we?

Can the moon....actually rise? Or is the earth doing all the moving?

Dana has come to think about it as the earth rolling over....and we had quite a lively discussion about what is actually happening.

But I like the sound of a moonrise.....so I'm sticking with that.

And somewhere between the moon & the trees is peace.

There are always more more questions than answers...and we all had lots of questions. But more important than any answers is that we were fully present while laughing...wondering....and watching a nearly full moon appearing to rise over the bay. It was spectacular....and felt like peace.

  1. Your post speaks to things near and dear to my heart, MaryAnn. Last month the weather was such that in my neck of the woods we missed any sight of the full moon along with the days leading up to and away from same. I am actively grateful that this month we've had clear skies for all the phases we missed last month. I've enjoyed the moonrises (moon appearances!), and my pal the moon has been companionably lighting my predawn walks, too.

    1. I knew you were a moon person....and love thinking of it as your companion on your predawn walks.

  2. I adore the moonrise so much more than the sunrise. I know that sunrise is significant of a new day, but perhaps a moonrise is the same thing- just a few hours earlier. A few years ago, while sitting on a beach, I had a the most fantastic experience of seeing the moon rise on my left and the sunset on my right. It truly was the most awesome experience- in every sense of the word- and took my breath away. I doubt that I will ever experience that again, but feel so blessed to have that time and memory living in a permanent place in my head.
    EnJOY!

    1. Thank you for this thoughtful comment Kathy....there is something special about both a sunrise/sunset...and a moonrise. (Do we ever talk about the moonset?) Thank you for sharing your story about seeing the sun setting and the moon rising at the same time! It IS an awesome event. While Paul and I were at Dana and Anne's the other night the sun was setting on the opposite side of the condo. Paul got a glimpse of it...but the rest of us were glued to the moon side. And I'll never forget when Paul performed a wedding on a boat on a lake in Madison WI.....there was a sunset AND a full moon rise view over the water during the festivities. It was awesome. And like you....it has a permanent place in my head! Thanks for taking me back there!

  3. So now I have goosebumps thinking of a Madison wedding on the lake with both the moon and the sunset! Such a beautiful location, and quite a physical metaphor for married life.
