Light, Love...and Stars

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."  Martin Luther King Jr.

Light and love.....that's what we need more of!

This morning I met for the last time via zoom with the "Project Group" from church. We would gather almost every Monday morning to do service projects for the church and the community, work on our own projects, or sometimes just sit and visit.  This fabulous group of women has been such a source of support and joy for me and I will miss them.

They had a very special puzzle made for me....and for now I'm just giving you a little glimpse. More to come at some point soon.

Still....

....feeling the love.

I had a whole different post planned....but I have to pause and follow-up a bit on yesterday.

Paul and I were so busy waving and laughing that I didn't take any photos of yesterday's actual parade. But thanks to Doug, our church photographer, I have a few to share.  There were 60 decorated and noisy cars filled with wonderful people wishing us well.

Joyful Abundance!

EVERYBODY should get a parade!

This was a great sign: Shupe Shupe Hooray!

Here's what it looked like from the parking lot of a neighbor church where cars gathered.

Feeling the Love!

Paul is just 2 weeks away from retirement....and then 2 weeks after that is our move.  Time is flying by!

This afternoon Hancock Church hosted a car parade for us....it was wild and fun! We wished we could have paused to visit with every single car!  Not being able to say goodbye in person with these good people has been difficult but it's the way it has to be.

It rained all morning but stopped just in time....it was 50 degrees and just perfect. Thank you Hancock Church...and thank you Ann and Nariman for hosting. We're feeling the love!

1,999

I put the 1,999th piece in the puzzle today....FINALLY!  I'm embarrassed to admit that I started this one in July....I even had to dust it several times. Oy!

I knew there was one piece missing...and I knew exactly where is was wasn't so no disappointment at the end.

And I just remembered that the last 2,000 piece puzzle I did had one extra piece....so it kind of evens out.

That one can be seen here in this post titled "2001":

Thank you Linda! I really enjoyed this one...and it took me so long because I've been highly distracted in the past several months.  But I do think I'll stick with 1000 or less from now on.

I knew it would get done today....and I only had a few pieces left when I finished my oatmeal this morning....but I just walked away.  I went back to it this afternoon and had my little celebratory moment....I like to savor the end.

Handstitching

"Everything in your life is a reflection of a choice you have made. If you want a different result, make a different choice." author unknown

At the beginning of the COVID lock down my friend Jane was cranking out quilts like crazy....and the miles of hand stitching on the bindings was a little daunting. Jane has done quite a bit of sewing for me over the years....so I offered to help her and I started with a couple of baby quilts.  Today she stopped in for a walk and I was able to pass them back to her.  After the move I hope she sends another one my way....I do enjoy the mindlessly mindful task of hand stitching in the evenings.

Sentimental Dilemma

I've mentioned this before...but one of the things that's true about a move is you have to touch ALL your stuff....multiple times.  You have to peek into stored boxes and pull things from dark corners of closets that have been out of sight and out of mind....for years.  I'm having to make decisions about lots of  things....and this is a story about one particular sentimental dilemma.

This is a photo of me when I was in 1st grade.  My mom made this blouse for me and I loved it and when I was wearing it I felt beautiful....and fancy.

I also remember the pin.  I'm not sure it was mine...and I don't have it....but I have clear memories of it.

Do you see the matching square of fabric in the other photo?

I made this quilt when I was older....either jr. high or early high school. Each square has a bit of stuffing in it so they puff up....they are sometimes called bubble or popcorn quilts. There's only one square from that blouse in the quilt and I recognize a few others that I had clothes made from.  My mom used to make a lot of clothes for me then she and 4-H leaders taught me how to sew so I took over. I made tons of things including lots of smocks....I thought they were cool.

In the last several months I've been looking for photos of my sister Angie for a slideshow...and I love this one of Angie, Marilyn, and me. And just in the last couple of days I realized that fabric from the dress I was wearing is also in this quilt several times.  I have fond memories of this homemade dress too.

The quilt is in terrible shape.....I used it for years including all through college and well beyond.  The border and binding are literally falling off and several of the "puffs" are no longer stuffed.

You can see that it was hand tied....and the backing is cheap faded blue flannel. It was a labor of love at the time....and I loved using it.  But for years it's just been sitting deep in a closet.....sad and tired.

I think it's time to let it go. When I can get up my nerve I'm going to snip out the fabrics that have some meaning....and do something small and sweet.  I will turn this sentimental dilemma into an opportunity to celebrate a time in my life when my clothes were handmade....and popcorn quilts and smocks were cool.

Pieces and Scraps

Paul sent me this photo of the view down our street this morning....while I was still tucked in bed.

As always the 3rd card in our 4 x 6 exchange is a keeper. I used every punched stamp square I had prepared ahead of time and every single scrap.... but I had just enough to finish my card for this week.

And for variety I put my mosaic pieces at an angle.  I randomly started in a corner and just started puzzling it together trimming it up as I went along.

I do love these moments when you have just right right scrap to glue on....and trim up.
I added a cutout of one of my stencil prints as a focal point....and finished it up with a zig zag border.  I actually think the border mimics the edges of the stamps so seemed just right. And there you have it....round 7 is complete and it's time to think about round 8.

Sunshine and Rainbows

The last of of Adam's 2021 intentions post:  "In 2021 we're looking ahead, we're reflecting as we go, we're checking in, we're being present, we're changing."  https://www.instagram.com/adamjk/

At the bottom of this 4th page was this image of a planner Adam sells....and I just love the title. "It's not all sunshine & rainbows (but a good amount of it actually is)"

Isn't that the truth!

A few days ago I stopped in to see my stained glass quilt all framed at Amy and Lisle's.  They had sent me photos...but it was really nice to see it in person and take a few of my own photos. Sorry for the repeat.....but I'm sharing my sunshine and rainbows.....again.

If you are new to the blog....you can read about my process here:

Surprise!

The third page of Adam's 2021 affirmations....they get me thinking.
https://www.instagram.com/adamjk/

I was cleaning up the dining room table and was just about to recycle this grocery circular I found under a pile of books.  Much to my delight there were several leaf pressings in between the pages that I had completely forgotten about....it's nice to know I can still surprise myself!

I hope they're not too dry for gel plate printing....that's why I pressed them.  I think I need to make time for that week so I can find out.

Mosaic Stamps

Here's the second page of Adam's post of simple affirmations for 2021.

I've been thinking lately about my own affirmations for the new year. They may just stay quietly in my head....and then again maybe I'll write them down.  I'm not good at that kind of thing....but I'm feeling I want to be a bit more intentional in 2021.

https://www.instagram.com/adamjk/

I have dozens of ideas rolling around in my head for our 4 x 6 exchange...but after visiting the most recent exhibition at Gallery Twist in Lexington I was inspired to do something with stamps for round 7.  I kept it simple using a tried and true punched mosaic technique. I've used it many times with photographs or other papers where I glue images down in a grid of some sort then punch them into squares and rearrange them to form a mosaic type piece.

My favorite punched mosaic project using my own photographs can be seen here in this post: http://joyfulputtering.blogspot.com/2016/05/mosaic-mirror.html

I will admit that I'm not sure I love the technique with stamps...I think I like them better whole....but now I know. I have a nice assortment of vintage stamps from a friend of Connie's....and it was time to use to use some.

I glued them down onto lightweight cardstock and punched out squares using my large punch.

I repeated the process over and over and I made enough sheets in one evening to punch up squares for all three cards.  I put the first two together over these last few weeks.

The first card was for Brenda. I glued the mosaic squares together on another substrate before attaching them to the card.  This allowed me tidy up the edges and cut it perfectly leaving that skinny little border I seem to like. And artist I admire always said things look better with a border or a frame. I've never forgotten and I still follow her advice most of the time.

But I still thought it needed something so I auditioned all kinds of overlays and landed on some skinny linked circles cut from the inside of security envelopes.  Stamps and security envelopes seemed like a good pairing.

Take a look at all the interesting patterns and colors inside these envelopes....and they come in the mail every single day.

Brenda's card ended up being pretty thick because there were so many layers involved....so for Becky's I glued the mosaic squares right onto the card trimming up the edges as I went along. I did lose the ability to get a little border.....there's no way I could have gotten it straight all the way around. But...maybe straight is overrated.

When I punch the squares there are always little leftovers that can be used as filler. This piece was used to fill in the gap at the end of the first row.  I glued it on then trimmed it up from the back.

This is how that row came out on the front.

As I glue on the squares I use this little paperweight to hold them down for a few minutes until the glue really grabs....and it's fun to look at.

Once again I knew I wanted something for an overlay....and I wanted it to be different.

I settled on some leafy cutouts from some of my painted papers....and I couldn't help myself from adding a border of stitching.  I just like a border.
Here is a link to the stamp artist at Gallery Twist:

And the best part is I have all the mosaic squares I need to finish my card next week. Our 4 x 6 exchange is just a delight and keeps me being creative even when I don't think I have time. That sounds like an affirmation...."make time to create even especially when you don't think you have time."

Round 7

https://www.instagram.com/p/CJOkh9sF1rX/

I was quite taken with these "intentions" from Adam J. Kurtz a few weeks ago....and I'm going to share the different pages of the post over the next few days. Such simple things....all doable.

https://www.instagram.com/adamjk/

The first two cards of round 7 of our 4 x 6 exchange have gotten where they need to go.....so today I'm celebrating the cards I received from both Becky and Brenda......tis the season for trees.

Becky created hers during the week of Christmas...and as you can see it's colorful and festive.

She used watercolor, Stickles Glitter Glue and metallic pens. Becky made some of the trees dimensional...and it's fun and sparkly!  Thanks Becky!

Brenda taped off the shape of her tree before she watercolored these soothing swaths of colors.
I just adore the little "joy" trunk.  Thanks Brenda!
