"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

100 Miles of Rope

I went into Boston this evening to celebrate my niece Clarke's birthday and see the rope sculpture floating over the Rose Kennedy Greenway. The Greenway is a mile and a half of city parks and walkways to connect people with the beauty of the outdoors....right in the middle of the city.

The sculpture was designed by Janet Echelman and includes over 100 miles of rope and over half a million knots.  It weighs about a ton and covers about half an acre. It is suspended from three skyscrapers.

We got there while it was still light...and it was not quite as impressive. Still really cool...but the best was yet to come.

We had a nice dinner...walked around a bit...then once it got dark found a couple of adirondack chairs and just watched it for a while. There is lighting from the buildings on both sides that change colors.  It sways a bit in the breeze and is quite relaxing to watch.  As the lights change we found ourselves oohing and aahing like we were watching a fireworks show....but it was nice and quiet.

There is more information on this website including a time lapse video of the installation. It will be up through October.
