"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Younger Selves

"Art isn't only a painting. Art is anything that's creative, passionate, and personal." Seth Godin

I've been working on curating an assortment of photos for Margie's online memorial service. I've spent hours going through her photo albums...our photos...and ones that family members have sent and getting them into a digital form. It's been a tedious task ...but also a very personal...sentimental journey.

I especially love this one of Margie's younger self.

I love her warm smile and her fabulous curls.

And I love the smocked dress knowing full well that is was homemade by either her, or her mother Dorothy. Probably both.

And I came across this one in one of her albums.

Paul and I weren't the professional studio photo type people so I'm guessing this was for a church directory. But maybe we should have done it more often....because they made us look pretty good...perm and all!

I couldn't help but think what advice would we give this younger version of ourselves. I'm going to ponder that for a bit....but I know it would include the word joy.

  1. SO glad you thought to share the joy of these photos—they are FABULOUS! Such a sweet tender thing it is to look back at our younger selves.

LOVE the home-sewn hand-smocked dress. Brings back strong sensory memories of fabric and patterns and marking and pinning and hemming that I associate with my mom, and the pleasures of same once I also began sewing.

From Elizabeth Berg's novel THE ART OF MENDING:

    She began cutting
    and we stopped talking,
both of us listening, I think,
to the sound of the scissors.
    For those of us
enamored of the world of textiles,
this sound is a little symphony.
    It conjures an image
of a head bent over a machine,
the feel of fabric slipping through fingers,
a small light focused on a field of intimate labor.

  2. I loved looking through old photos of my mother-in-love so that I could make an online slide show and a physical photo album. It was such a treat to see her as a baby, a child, and as a spectacularly beautiful young woman, then as an exquisitely lovely aging woman, always smiling, always loving. I am so glad you get to do this daunting and joyful task, MaryAnn.
