"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Celebrating Blue

I spied these hyacinths on our way to the rally this morning...so I'm celebrating blue today!

They were behind a metal trellis type thing...but I was able to slide my hand under for a photo.

I couldn't really see what I was doing...but I think I did pretty well!
This afternoon during the rain (yay!) I sat down at the sewing machine to ease back into the studio. No plan...just a piece of watercolor paper and my blue tutti frutti swatch from my stash.

I wasn't very creative with my design...but it got me back into the swing of things. I didn't want to change the presser foot to stitch around the outer edge to attach it to the card.....so I took a chance and did it free motions. I like the concept....but the execution could be improved.

I want to keep developing this idea of plants and vessels....so here's what I learned:

  • I like that I left the jagged edge on the top.
  • I like the wonky free motion stitching around the edge...but it can be vastly improved and better balanced.
  • But I also like the combo of straight and zig zag I did last time too. I may set up my second sewing machine somewhere so I don't have to change the foot.
  • I want to sketch out some designs that include a variety of flower shapes and leaves.
  • I want to experiment with different vessel shapes.
  • I need to remember that I don't always need to paint them.
  • I hpe to keep practicing and experimenting.

Favorite sign of the day! Yes! Let's welcome the stranger and love our neighbors!

  1. MaryAnn, terrific photo taken blindly through the metal trellis thing!

Wow, way to go easing back into your studio. LOL about your not wanting to change the presser foot to stitch around the outer edge to attach it to the card so taking a chance and doing it free motion—I can soooo identify with that! That impatience can lead to excellent experimentation, as you well know. I'm quite enamored of your free motion border, both in concept and execution, and I am very enamored of your enumeration of learnings from today's studio playtime. Hats off to you!

    1. Thanks Dotty! The "not wanting to change the presser foot" thing worked out OK. It will be better when I have more of an edge to grab on to...and do just a bit more planning. But I appreciate your enthusiasm. It's good to be making something again.

  2. First, happy Mother’s Day because you mother the young people around you with art being your love language 💕. Second, I love your new card and think you definitely should see about setting up a second machine. Isn’t it so human to let changing feet on a sewing machine be a barrier?

    1. Happy Mother's Day to you too! We all do a lot of mothering....and we all get mothered by other mothers. Thanks for the thumbs up on the card....and yes I WILL set up my other sewing machine. Maybe all three! No more excuses!
