"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

One of Those Days

Believe in yourself like a groundhog who thinks he's a meteorologist!

Yesterday was Groundhog's Day...but it was also our son Nate's 40th birthday. Paul and I treated him to breakfast at Miss Portland Diner this morning....and we're having a festive family celebration on Friday.

Nate is remarkable young man who has overcome some daunting challenges and obstacles in life...and he has grown into one of the most interesting and resilient adults that I know.

Spending time with our boys brings us so much joy.

And that alone would have been enough for one day....but there was so much more. So if can put up with my rambling....settle in....it was one of those days filled with everyday magic. Hopefully you had some too.

On our way home....Paul gladly chauffeured me around for some errands that were lingering on my list. He introduced me to a second....kind of hidden in plain sight downtown post office. It's now my favorite post office.

Paul waited in the car while I ran into Trader Joe's for more Unexpected Cheddar Cheese Spread....which by the way....is one of my favorite treats. Especially on my homemade seeded crackers. And he knew I had a piece of plexiglass in the back of the car that I wanted cut at the hardware store...and he sat in the car while I did that too.

I love my local hardware store. The guys are so friendly...and ready to help with whatever I need. Chris cut the plexiglass for free and was even interested in knowing what I was going to do with it.

I knew Paul was waiting in the car...and wouldn't mind waiting a bit longer while I explained my plan. He knows me....and still loves me and knows when to let me shine.
I got a beautiful hand drawn thank you card from Judy with a little surprise inside. When I wrote about one of her journals I swooned over a beautiful floral strip...and wished I had it in my own stash. Judy didn't miss a beat...and now I do. Turns out...it was from a tissue pack...you know...like Kleenex.

And after separating the ply I adhered a few of my own strips onto some backing ready for a new project I'm excited about. More on that another time.

I took a mid afternoon walk on the first warmish day we've had in a long time....I didn't even need my lined pants. I looked for shadows and ice lace as I walked and soaked in the sunshine. I took a lot photos and will need to edit and narrow it down to a few favorites to share. Here's just one for now.

I haven't even covered all the bases...but you get the idea.

Even on a day like this....maybe especially on a day like this filled with simple joys....I am painfully aware of the uphill climb we face as a country. There are hideous things our government is trying to get away with....and we have to keep showing up and keep saying NO!

Joy is an act of resistance...and days like this feed my soul and remind me that I should show up even more.

  1. So much joy shining out here! You may be familiar with the term "forest bathing," i.e. the practice of immersing oneself in nature using all five senses to reduce stress and improve health; what you offer is JOY BATHING, and I am splashing, dunking myself under, and generally cavorting in the joy that just kept on pouring from the faucet of your day, MaryAnn.

AND I want to know more about the plexiglass square!

    1. Thanks Dotty. Yes, I am familiar with forest bathing....and I love thinking about joy bathing! That's exactly what yesterday felt like....being immersed and fed by simple everyday events.

As far as the plexiglass goes...it's not as exciting as you might think. I've posted about it before...but I'll keep you guessing and report on it soon. I do love a good tease.

    1. Thank you so much Eliane! I'm so glad you came across my blog on Pinterest. It comforting to hear from other crafters around the world. Yes, we have to keep creating and connecting, that is how we find joy and resist. I am so sorry to hear that your government is also working against the people. May both our countries find our way through the chaos and be at peace. Thank you so much for reaching out. Welcome to my Joyful Puttering blog.

  3. I am reposting Eliane comment in English:

Hello Mary Ann, I had the immense pleasure and luck of meeting you today, February 3rd, 2026, through Pinterest. I loved your work, everything you do, your texts and photos, congratulations!!! My name is Eliane, I'm Brazilian and I live in São Paulo. I'm also a craftswoman, but I don't make things as beautiful as yours. PS: I have family established in Dallas and Atlanta, and they, and we here in Brazil, also agree and say NO to the "horrible things that our government is trying to approve with impunity," as you yourself said. The Brazilian government isn't 100% either, and we also try to show up and say NO! While things don't improve, the best we can do is continue our lives and keep doing crafts, be well with our family and friends, right? I wish you and your country all the best. A big hug.

  5. Sounds like a great day to me!! I love those days where little sparks of joy just keep happening! And did you fuse one of the tissues to a paper with text on it? Love it!! And I hope your son continues to have a joy-filled birthday week!
