"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Joy Journal Project Update

We had three or four inches of snow overnight....it was just lovely when I woke up. But we hit almost 50 degrees this afternoon so the new snow melted quickly. We still have HUGE piles of snow everywhere.....but spring was in the air!

I headed out to find some joy in the snow this morning and this was my favorite shot of the day!

The fresh snow on the branch...along with the melting and freezing ice under the branch made me giddy.
The long ribbon shadows on the pond were awe inspiring!

I've had several productive days in the studio....but these journals take time. I'm still having fun....and I appreciate your patience. There are also lots of other life things that pull me away from the studio....all good.

I do enjoy the opportunity to personalize these blue and white journals a bit. Dotty wanted pockets for poems....and pockets she got!
I also love the process of getting acquainted with papers and ephemera you send me.....and enjoy figuring out how to honor them. Margaret wanted spaces and places for her own sketching and watercolor.....but she sent quite a few printed papers. But I mixed plain papers in where I could.

This hydrangea was her own watercolor that she made into cards. It's what she wrote the note on to me...so that handwritten note is on the back. I do love when I have an opportunity to cut something out along one edge....and I think her hydrangea is pretty against the blue and white paper she provided.

The last few days I've been working on Susan's....and it's nearly done.

Here's an official Joy Journal Project update....the first 9 have been mailed:

1. and 2. Judy, two test journals with her own papers
3. Marilyn, with her own papers
4. Linda, blue and white journal winner
5. Lily, blue and white
6. Debbie L, blue and white
7. Dotty, blue and white
8. Margaret, blue and white and her own papers
9. Anne, blue and white
10. I am finishing up Susan's with her own papers.
11. I'm ready to start Diane's with her own papers.

Next in line:
12. Cherie sent me a few of her own papers and some other fun things I'll be sharing soon.
13. Debbie C., blue and white but she also sent me several of her own papers so I'm holding off on hers for now. Thanks for being patient Debbie.

Kristin chose a cyanotype print instead of a journal and it has been mailed.
I'm still waiting on contact information in an email from Mary Ann if she still wants a blue and white journal:  joyfulputtering@gmail.com

I know of at least two or three of you who might still send me papers. My Joy Journal Project will be ongoing for a while...so there's plenty of time. I will get to them all eventually!

For any of you who are new to the blog or want more information about this project...here's the original Joy Journal Project offer

I have come to understand that some people might not have papers to send. I am willing to make a journal out of my papers in a color scheme of your choice.

I am also aware that some people may not want to use their journal for art. Your journal doesn't have to have blank pages...it just can be a pretty book to tuck things into pockets. If you have questions...please email me at joyfulputtering@gmail.com

  1. MaryAnn, I'm getting a good laugh out of suddenly making a connection between the Joy Journal you made me and a nickname one of my student had for me. At some point during my few years of tutoring a young man named Sam he said he carried strategies in his mind that I'd presented to him during our sessions together … "It's like you're an app I have, called Pocket Dotty!"

Wow! Margaret's watercolor hydrangea is beautiful, and beautifully shown off against the blue and white paper.

Your final photo looks like a cyanotype : )
