Butterfly Weed is one of my very favorite early summer plants to watch. I don't have one...but there's one in our neighborhood that I walk by almost every day.
Every single stage is so special. The tight green buds turn to bright orange balls which open to fabulous flowers with tiny yellow centers. It makes my heart sing.I acquired a large watercolor pad from a friend and cut and folded a couple of concertina/accordion books a while back. I have several things in mind....but it was time to do something with one of them. Completely inspired by an Instagram post by Connie Fong I used my stencils to trace overlapping designs on one side.
I wondered whether I wanted to color....paint or doodle....so I decided to all three. I'm also going to add collage and fabric elements. It's going to be a quiet...ongoing summer project.
This was a collage I did back 2024 for Color week of the Conscious Creativity Class with Philippa Stanton. I love it enough to revisit the wonky technique.
Oh it’s going to be beautiful. I can’t wait to see it unfold. Have fun and keep smiling😄
ReplyDeleteThanks Louise! I love your pun about seeing it "unfold"....which is will to literally...and in color! Love when you pop up here once in a while!
DeleteWell, this post was like being let loose in a candy shop, MaryAnn!
ReplyDelete• Those butterfly weed blossoms are spectacular, and have me hankering for such a plant in our (already stuffed to overflowing) gardens. I'll be showing these photos to Dave.
• I will LOVE watching the unfolding of your quiet ongoing summer project with the stenciled shapes on concertinaed watercolor paper. YUM!
• And, oh!, that 2024 color collage! It inspired me to create something of similar ilk. Might have to play with the concept again.
You are rocking your rainbows!!!
A candy shop! Yes! The butterfly weed is amazing and I'm glad I have one to watch. I will have fun with this concertina.....the stencil shapes seemed like a simple way for me to start and I'll try to get creative with what I do with it. And YES....I remember your collage project well and will likely use yours as inspiration for what I do next!
DeleteThe butterfly weed flowers remind me a bit of what I call Grandma plant which is latana. I lived with my grandmother when I was five until I was eight and she had latana plants in her yard that grew as perennials. Every year they would be covered in small orange butterflies…..because of the memory, I’ve had a Grandma plant in my yard every year 😄. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
ReplyDeleteI love lantana....and yes this has similar bloom clusters. Butterfly weed is more upright. It's so fun when something sparks a memory....especially of a grandmother. I associate my grandmother with peonies.
DeleteOh wow, this should be a great summer project, MaryAnn! I looked at Connie's inspiration post and could see where you're going with this. I look forward to seeing it in color! And those Butterfly Weed plants are gorgeous! We've had a lot of rain between yesterday and this morning so I just know everything will be blooming away here once the sun comes out!! Judy
ReplyDeleteThanks Judy...I'm going to have fun with this! We've had much of the same rain....and there's more to come. The plants love the rain...but the blooms often get soggy....so it's a mixed bag. I'm using today's rainy day to enjoy the indoors.
