"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Ducklings

I feel blessed that we live on a property with a pond.

And I'm tickled that we have two families of ducklings on the pond

They're so much fun to watch.

Just this morning as I was walking around the path one of the moms caught my eye. Generally when someone walks by she scoots right in the water with the babies behind her. But she just sat still. I got a little closer...but not too close to see if the babies were there. I was able to zoom in and sure enough....the babies were all huddled under her and you could seem the squirming about.

I was pleased that she was comfortable enough knowing I wasn't a threat.

Every few days they waddle through the backyard...and it's always a treat!

  1. Make way for ducklings! Pure delight! And, gosh, that pond is beautiful! Thanks for the photo story, MaryAnn.

Seeing those duckling photos brings back a memory from 20+ years ago. Dave and I were vacationing in Chincoteague, VA, and Meg had joined us for a weekend. The three of us were sitting riverside on a dock somewhere when a mama and her baby ducklings came parading along the dock whose end was about three feet or more above water level. Mama left the end of the dock and entered the water and each of those trusting little babies just followed her right off the dock. They were SO tiny and light (younger than your crew), landing with barely a splash like fluffy ping pong balls! Just the sweetest : )

  2. I wanted to share with you that I went to an estate sale this weekend (my first time), and one of the things I picked up was a little book made up with hand made papers. Immediately, I got the bug to make a junk journal or art journal of sorts. Back in 2024 or maybe it was 2023, I got an ounce of joy from you and I never used did anything with it. Now my plan is to put them together for a 'Joy Journal' of sorts. I did not get to play with them yet, but perhaps this weekend! This will be a lot of fun I think.
Thank you for your inspiring posts, MaryAnn. Especially for the journaling/collage/sketchbooks/fibers/etc/etc/etc. And of course thanks for the Joy.

    1. Oh Ellen...this makes me so happy! You are so welcome! Sometimes things need to sit around for just the right moment....and I hope that's the case for the Ounce of Joy. Your book of handmade papers sound like a wonderful find! And I love the sounds of "Joy Journal".....I may have to adopt that for myself. You made my day!

    2. So much fun! By all means, adopt the "Joy Journal" label. I remembered that I have a brand new gelly plate that I can also explore. I got it when it was on sale, but then got distracted with other things. LOL
