I sent a note to my siblings on our Facebook message board this morning asking if any of them had cucumbers soaking in rice vinegar on their counter. Is that a thing for anyone else? My sibs all remembered this from childhood...although our mom always added a little bit of sugar.
And this little porcelain(?) dish has sweet memories too....literally and figuratively. When my mom would make pies she would put the extra crust in this dish and bake it with a bit of cinnamon and sugar. Or extra filing if there was enough.Sweet Memories = Joy!

Very sweet memories, MaryAnn. Cucumbers soaking in rice vinegar not "a thing" for me, so tell me more. A counterpart summer memory for me is those late afternoons when my mom would stop at a farm stand on the way home from the pond where we swam, announcing strawberry shortcake for dessert. One of us would slice up the berries, one would whip the cream, and my mom usually rustled up the biscuits from scratch.
ReplyDeleteIt's as simple as that....cucumber slices soaking in rice vinegar as a zesty little snack. I like mine cold so keep them in the fridge. (Great with just a touch of sugar...but I don't do that anymore.)
DeleteYour memory of strawberry shortcake brought that right back for me too. We had a big strawberry patch on the farm so that was a regular treat because there were always strawberries in the freezer during the off season. There was even a special strawberry bowl and masher. And the homemade biscuits made it complete and either whipped cream or ice cream. I'm drooling!
My mom made leftover crust into cinnamon sugar treats, now I always do the same for our now grown sons. Pie is the preferred birthday treat and always included are the cinnamon sugar treats!
ReplyDeleteYes! Do glad to hear that you have that memory too Kristen! And how fun is it that you are continuing it on! Pie or cheesecake are the preferred birthday treats in my family too! Thanks for sharing!
DeleteWe usually had a small dish of sliced cucumbers on the table for dinner. It would start with a small amount of water, vinegar, maybe pepper, and a few ice cubes. I remember having sliced cucumber sandwiches, too. Both were delicious!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary....I'm going to add some pepper and ice cubes to my slices! I like them cold...so keep them in the fridge...but the ice cubes are a great idea. And I remember cucumber sandwiches too! Yum!
DeleteThe old platter my mother used for a pile of pork chops is framed in our kitchen. I’m about to unframe it and use it. It’s not a museum piece.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness...I love this Cheryl ! I love that you have come to understand that it needs to be used! Yes yes yes!
