"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Sumac #2

It's not the weight you carry
but how you carry it -
books, bricks, grief -
it's all in the way you embrace it, balance it, carry it
when you cannot, and would not put it down.

Advice from Mary Oliver's friend Daniel from her poem Heavy.

How lucky am I to get these beautiful watercolor poppies in the mail from Roseanne!

Aren't those speckles just the right finishing touch. Thanks Roseanne!

I finished sumac painting #2.

Just this morning I saw this branch...another inspiration for watercolor! Are the stems always red? Or is this part of the fall change?

My painting started with this cyanotype print from a few days ago....and it ended up as a card for a friend.

I just looked back at some of my photos on the blog...and lo and behold the sumac stems are sometimes red! Not always...but sometimes.

I love noticing something new! And as I was looking back I came across this photo from a few years ago of a stunning sumac leaf! Maybe it will be the inspiration for sumac #3.

  1. Not being a plant person, I did not know what sumac leaves looked like, but now I do! Your painted cyanotype is striking, MaryAnn, as is the painting by your friend Roseanne. And the quotation you began with is very thought provoking. Just about every post on your blog inspires me! Judy

    1. Thanks Judy! I've been having fun with these prints. I love the blue background...and the process gives you such a nice shape to work with. Kind of like coloring!

I'm so glad you find inspiration here. That makes me very happy!
