"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Pineapples and Poppies

The pineapple is often seen as a symbol of hospitality....warmth and welcome.

So when Paul came home with odd this odd little pineapple...I knew the others at my puzzle table would welcome it with open arms.

I thought I would share a few projects from the past while I'm focusing on other things. Art has been a huge part of my joyful puttering life...and it will most certainly be again at some point soon. And revisiting some of these projects may help propel me forward.

Back in 2016 I took a class called Sticky Fingers with Ellen Lindner. We created a fabric project using a glue solution to both to adhere the fabrics and topcoat the piece. It was an interesting and sticky process.

I wrote about this finished poppy project here:

And some process photos can be found here:

The project is wrapped around an art canvas which gives it a nice finished look. I think the technique is interesting...but once it's adhered to the canvas there is no way to stitch. And I do love stitching.

It hung in my kitchen in Lexington all those years in this cobalt corner...but has yet to find a home in the condo.

I'm auditioning it in a few places....but in the end I may give it away.

  1. You and Paul find the best stuff, gotta say! And what happy revelry must take place every time someone/thing new joins the crowd already in residence!

Lovely idea to showcase some of your art history. WOW to your poppies piece! It's fabulous, MaryAnn. There is such appealing balance in the combination of textures, variety of pattern, and feeling of restfulness even in the negative space of the cobalt color field despite its also holding pattern and textures. The composition is a delight—a compelling asymmetry balanced by the differing visual weights of the blue background and the 'busier" poppies in the foreground.

    1. There is something about an unusual found object that captures my heart every time. And having this little cloud of witnesses is one of the small things that lifts my heart during these turbulent times.

Thanks for helping me celebrate this golden oldie. I appreciate these thoughtful comments coming from an artist I admire! Thank you Dotty!

    1. Ha ha. That's not going to happen...so either I'll have to construct a highrise...or a few of them will have to be retired at some point. For now...they bring me comfort and joy.
