"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Other Mothers

Happy Mother's Day and Happy Other Mother's Day!

In her Letters from an American newsletter, Heather Cox Richardson shared a wonderful piece this morning about Sally, one of her other mothers. She refers to other mothers as the cool aunts, the elderly ladies, the family friends, even the mentors who whip us into shape. I would add mother-in-law to the list.

I loved my mother....she died when I was just 29 years old. But I've been lucky to have several other mothers in my life in life: Beverly, Lucy, Margie, Carol, Marian, Connie, Muffy, and Peggy come to mind. They have all helped whip me into shape in one way or another.

And I'm lucky to be the mother to these two amazing  and interesting young men. I'm so proud of both of them and could listen to them banter back and forth for hours. They continue to surprise me with their wisdom and humor.

We had a family brunch today...and took the opportunity to spread Margie's ashes. Margie was an extra special other mother.

  1. I always look at your blog in the morning before reading Heather because I get a bit of joy from you before facing hard truths from her!! Seriously, I loved her piece about other mothers and have had a few of my own! So glad you had a nice day with your family, MaryAnn. I had a long conversation with my daughter in Canada and a lovely lunch out with my hubby! Judy

    1. So good to connect with our kids no matter where they are. And what's not to love about a lunch out with the hubby! Sounds like we both had a nice Mother's Day.

I always learn something from Heather.
