I took a break from the grunge in the garage and the disheartening news...and I did a little painting in my watercolor journal last evening.
I'm feeling very disconnected from my art supplies...but that's what happens in the summer and early fall. Studio days are coming.I was out of practice....so painting soft circles was a good place to start. I love to let the colors bleed and play with each other.....and I'm quite fond of this soft palette.
I used the extra paint on my palette to paint swatches
on the opposite page....all ready for doodling.
And today...on this summery fall day...I doodled and painted a little more on the patio. My doodles were inspired by Karen Elaine.
I still had paint on the pallet so I did a little glazing on top of some of the leaves...and a little more doodling.
It looked pretty good at this point...just a few more lines but per usual....it's hard for me to know when to stop.I went a little too far....It's a little busy.
However....I do think it's a pretty little spread...and it was
an absolute delight to paint and doodle on the patio today.

The soft colors soothe and calm me. I love how what started as swatches created from paint leftover from your bubbles-play became a bona fide work of art in its own right, moving from plain orderly arrays to orderly arrays embellished with elegant doodles. In the end, this spread showcased unity in color and contrast in level of detail and style of pattern. When I saw the final spread, what popped into mind was the here-is-the-church-here-is-the-steeple children's hand rhyme, which ends with "open the doors and they all run away"—it's as though (sorry to mix analogies) someone came along and poked at the tidy rows of swatches dressed in their finest and, once pricked, they lost their shape and details, became bubbles, and floated away in delighted disorder : )
ReplyDeleteThe colors calmed me too!
DeleteI smiled all the way through this comment Dotty! I wouldn't have thought about the church in the steeple...but now it's making me chuckle. I knew the pages spoke to one another...but now I KNOW they are delighted with each other!
I think your leaves look great—not too far at all!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! That makes me feel better!
DeleteSuch a lovely watercolor spread, MaryAnn. I love the soft colors and the drawings in the swatches - not too much at all! I'm inspired! Judy
ReplyDeleteThanks Judy! I guess I'll just stick with "a pretty little spread." I love the colors too!
