Campobello is a beautiful island in New Brunswick, Canada that can easily be accessed by a bridge in Lubec, Maine. Patsy, Brian, Paul and I spent several delightful hours there yesterday. We toured the grounds and summer home of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and explored Campobello International Park....the only park run jointly by two different countries.
It was fascinating to hear the family stories and be reminded of a Presidency that made a difference in the lives of everyday Americans. FDR's presidency is ranked as one of the most impactful in American history. He created a world that unfortunately our current president is trying to tear down.We drove all around the island and took several walks that ended with magnificent views and vistas. Everywhere we looked...there was something awe inspiring.
The rock beach in Herring Cove was fun.
One of my favorite walks was this boardwalk dotted with hackmatack trees all along the way. Many were small and scruffy....and I was smitten with their character.
This harsh coastal winds and weather give these pines a run for their money. Nevertheless...they persist.
Like all hackmatack trees...
the needles were as soft as a baby brush and were just starting to turn yellow before they drop. And it reminds me that I'll have to be keeping an eye on Bessie as her needles turn yellow too.
It's clear why Maine is called the Pine Tree State. The tall pines against the blue sky were a stunning accent to the views and vistas.

Hackmatacks! So many compelling views and vistas! I am very partial to Maine—my dad grew up in Old Town, and then after retirement (having lived in NJ, the Netherlands, and London for his work life) lived in Bethel for 35 years. Thanks for sharing your trip to visit Patsy and Brian. The best!
