The birds have been an absolute joy this winter. About half dozen bluebirds or more continue to come to the feeder by the patio every morning for breakfast. They are a delightful part of my morning ritual.
This morning we had some unfamiliar visitors at the feeder in the woods. The regulars were there too...titmouse, chickadees, cardinals, doves, and a few woodpeckers. The new visitors looked a bit like finches....but they were way too big and the coloring was a bit different.
With the help of the Maine Birds Facebook group I belong to I learned they are Evening Grosbeaks....a declining species in the Eastern U.S. I was quite taken with lovely conversation between eight or ten of us online....all because of our shared love of birds. Community is an act of resistance.

Kind loving community is such a wonderful act of resistance.
ReplyDeleteWay back in the day, when my kids and their maternal cousins were probably tweens, they thought it was hilariously funny when one of my parents would get wildly excited about spotting particular birds at the feeder just outside their enclosed sunporch at their Maine home—"Walt! Walt! An evening grosbeak! Come quick!" Now, of course, these grown 'kids' with kids of their own get excited themselves at such sightings : )
Love that story Dotty! We do become our parents in so many ways!
DeleteI have a friend who is a birder and I've enjoyed going with her to marshes and wooded areas where she identified birds by their songs with an APP. This Evening Grosbeak is a beauty and how wonderful that you have an online community in which you can share your love of birds!
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to go along with an actual birder. This is the first time I've asked a question in the group...mostly I just watch and learn. It was so much fun to chat with a few people about our love of birds.
