Jane and I are both fans of Jo Diggs and her landscape quilts....and we each have a little collection of our own. Mine hangs as part of a collage wall in my entryway which I walk by many many times a day. I have five of her pieces.
I was actually all signed up to take an in person course with Jo when COVID hit so unfortunately it was cancelled. Just a few years later she passed away. She was such a talent!
More than a year ago Jane took one of her smaller pieces apart because there was fading...or some other issue. She added a new linen layer for the snow and handed it off to me to frame using my fused binding technique.
Jane is coming over later this week to shop my fabric stash....and I wanted to hand it off to her. So it's finally done!
I used a wooden canvas for the base.....which I padded with a thin layer of batting.
I cut the binding out of hand dyed fabric and attached strips of fusible webbing along one edge. I sewed it on the quilt mitering the corners.
I stretched it onto the canvas and fused the binding to the back. I added some extra fused strips to tidy it up and make it more attractive.
It's a framing/binding techniques that I have used over and over again...
it works like a dream!
I wrote about hanging my gallery wall here in this post.
Jane's piece would fit right in!

Your fused binding technique DOES work like a dream, and a very lovely dream at that! The way you finished off the back is fantastic also—is like a second piece of art in its own right. Wow! And aren't you just like gods of yore, throwing your weight around replacing and repositioning the moon, oh powerful one!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dotty....I thought spiffing up the back was a nice touch. And I chuckled at your comment about the moon. It was not an easy task....so your comment made me smile. The old moon was positioned way too high for the new format...and when I took it off it was frayed and unusable. Now I feel the power!
DeleteI thought I had commented on this post but realized now that I forgot to. I was so excited to read about your being a fan of Jo Diggs! She was one of my early influences in loving fabric appliqué and I even took a class from her long ago, I think at Vermont Quilt Festival. It's pretty vague in my memory, but I also used to see her work in a little shop in Kennebunkport called, I think, Plum something.I remember that she had appliquéd clothing as well. Anyway, you did a wonderful job spiffing up this piece of artwork! I think Jo would approve!
ReplyDeleteOh...I love this connection Judy. I met Jo several times and even got to go to her home....but never got to take a class from her. She was such a wonderful talent.
