"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice." Martin Luther King Jr.
We got about five inches of snow overnight creating a fresh white canvas for the long winter shadows.
I spent most of the day tucked inside puttering and sorting things in my studio....staying busy and purposefully ignoring the news. I actually thought about Margie several times. As a woman of faith and justice...today would have been really hard for her.And speaking of long shadows....I was struck by this tall shadow-like silhouette of my amaryllis stem as I was passing through the kitchen.
"Trouble is in the land; confusion all around.....But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars." Martin Luther King Jr.
So appreciate your thoughts on a sad day. Thank you for sharing.

Sad day indeed. I avoided it all yesterday, but in order to be informed I am reading my morning newsletters and am overwhelmed with horror and grief for our country. The quote you shared is powerful. How does one celebrate joy in the midst of this? But joy matters....so maybe that's where we start.
DeleteIt is a sad day. I kept busy doing laundry, playing with quilt fabric and knitting. No news today. Your words are always a comfort to me, MaryAnn.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kristin. I was able to avoid it all yesterday, but I will have to find a balance between staying informed, and celebrating joy. As I read my morning newsletters it already seems worse than I could have imagined. We have a tough road ahead of us. But I still believe there is always joy to be found.
DeleteThank you for this post, MaryAnn. Neighbor friends of ours, with whom we enjoyed dinner together at our home the day after elections in November invited us for dinner at their home last evening. We were grateful to be in simpatico connection with friends, to have created joy among ourselves on both challenging occasions. We were also grateful for the fresh white canvas of snow and sunshine to set it sparkling.
ReplyDeleteI was also give an amaryllis for Christmas! It's the first one I've ever seen that came with a coat of red wax encasing the bulb. It does not need any care or water! Somehow it is just finding the light and growing all on its own. About once a day I give it a quarter turn to assist it in growing straight up, and that's it!
How wonderful to be sharing food and conversation with friends last evening. We are doing that tonight. That kind of connection with people we love and respect is going to help us get through this.
DeleteI know you feel the same way I do about amaryllis. But you and I also celebrate and honor the gifts that are given to us....and it will be fun to compare notes on our freakishly wonderful oversized blooms. I have seen them in those wax encasings....and I'm intrigued how that can possibly work. I have an old fashioned one that I have to keep moist. Keep me posted on yours...you'll be seeing mine here on the blog.
