"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

PEMDAS

Subtitle: Order of Operations

Do you remember PEMDAS?  Parentheses, exponents, multiplication and division, and addition and subtraction. I may never use it again...but I don't think I'll ever forget the order of operations for mathematics.

I felt like I had an order of operations strategy for my Christmas undecorating making it less of a chore and more of a puttering project. We're still enjoying some lights and a few decorations...but I wanted to gradually tone it down and get most of the spaces back to ordinary time. So I created an order of operations of sorts.

I started several days ago putting away the Santas....then a few other things that were more Christmasy. The next day I transitioned my window sill and dining room hutch from Christmas to winter with some snowmen and trees.

Yesterday I took the ornaments off the tree leaving just the lights for New Year's Eve. And just today....the tree is down and all put away. It feels good!

Order of operations was the way to go this year!

I'll enjoy the snowmen and trees for the month of January.
Happy New Year! Bring on 2025!

  1. And a happy new year to you!

Love hearing about your PEMDAS approach to undecorating! I have been doing much the same, though without explicitly categorizing my approach as an order of operations. We have family coming in late next week so I've left everything wintry out and tucked the specifically Christmassy items away.

What beautiful January arrays you have on display, MaryAnn!

    1. I actually think a lot of us do it this way. But PEMDAS popped into my mind this year and put a spring in my step. Nice to have a family gathering to look forward to!
