Mood Lighting

I love fall....and I don't mind it getting dark earlier in part because I enjoy mood lighting.

I strung a set of lights on the fence along the patio in Maine...large orbs of colorful strings. Festive and fun during the day when they're off....

...subtle and soothing in the evening when they're on.  Just the right amount of soft glow....the photo doesn't do it justice.  Speaking of mood lighting don't you love that sky!

Number Four

"I do my best seeing when I'm not looking so hard for what I think I should find." Brian Andreas via his instagram feed

I finished stack number four which measures about 12 by 20.  I might call it "Fall Clean-Up"....kind of a nod to the fact that I used a napkin. I debated about quilting the top....but I'm glad I didn't.  The only stitching on this one is on the stripe stack.

Of course there are things I would have done differently....but I like it so I'm not going to dwell on them. It has a nice rich fall feel...so will work well for the November show.

Harder Than I Thought

Over the past couple of days I kept moving along with my glass stack experiment. I will admit it ended up being harder than I thought...or at least trickier.

I glued the side pieces on....that went OK.
And I grouted....and that seemed to go OK....but I sure made a big mess.  I took the photo below right after I took my gloves off....it had to sit for a few minutes before I started cleaning it up.

I still need to do some more cleaning and buffing...but this is where I left it today before I headed to Maine. It's OK....but as usual I've learned some lessons and there are things I will do differently next time.

One of my problems is that I may have made the wrong decision about which edge of the glass to expose.  I chose to have the side glass edges exposed on the front creating this pinstripe frame. I could have had this line on the sides which I think would have been better.  Some of the edges of the glass have a very grainy texture....especially that top blue piece so it looks a little rough.

I also don't really like the white grout....it should have been tinted and I may still be able to do something about that.  It is an off white and looked darker when I put it on....but it sure dried brighter.

I'm not loving the neutral glass I chose...it's too tan. It should have been more on the creamy white to gray side or I should have just stuck with the blues and greens.  So I need to plan my color scheme a little better next time. I really just jumped right in and didn't really do much auditioning or planning at all.

Grouting is a little harder than I thought and probably just takes practice....and maybe some better tools. I think the general concept is good...so I'll do a little more research and planning and try it again on a smaller scale.

My favorite part of getting back to the glass was wearing these white cotton gloves.  My sister Becky, who passed away several years ago of breast cancer, gave me a whole bag from her time working at a factory.  They are especially useful when you are soldering glass because of the heat and they protect my fingers when I cut glass. And when I need to grind a piece of glass it gets wet and I have a built in towel right on my hand.  I actually got a little emotional when I put them on this time....I miss her!

Closer Look

I'm always drawn in for a closer look when I see berries or fruit on the trees. When I took a closer look at this branch yesterday I was quite taken by the water drips and the spider webs.  I'm always glad when I take the time to look....there's usually so much more to see.

How Hard Can It Be?

I want to have more than just fabric in this next show....so I'm diving back into an old hobby and giving glass stacks a try. I've done a fair amount of stained glass using the copper foil and soldering technique...but I've always wanted to try mosaic. How hard could it be? I have lots of glass...and several years ago even bought Welbond Glue and grout.  I was ready to go.

I'm using a long wooden canvas as my base....it's about 6 by 26 inches. All the glass is opaque so no light source is needed. The spaces will be filled in with grout which will accentuate the lines....I just hope I haven't left to big of a gap. In hindsight it might have been smarter to start on something smaller. Too late now!

I'm going to let this dry really well then cover all the edges.  I want it to look like it's wrapped right around the canvas.

I was really into glass for a while so have all the tools I need including this great work surface that catches little pieces of glass and allows you to set up rulers and jigs to make even cuts. Here I cut a long pice of blue then set up a jig and sliced off smaller squares all the same size.

And here I cut longer strips of green.

Once the glass is scored I have this handy dandy tool that breaks it along the score line. It's like a big plastic pliers. Bigger pieces I can snap with my hands....but these tiny pieces are hard to get a hold of. This tool works well.

Glass is messy work so I have a makeshift shop in the basement and have a nice view of the water heater and furnace. It was kind of a gloomy damp day....so I was OK being in the basement.

How hard can it be? So far so good...we'll see how the rest goes.

The Joy of Collecting

Inspired by yesterday's zinnias I'm not sure I could have gotten anything else done today until I played with my whole wabi-sabi collection of dried treasures. Ever since I took the Consciously Creative class a year ago I've been collecting and watching things shrivel...I'm pleased with how many have maintained good color.  Oh....the joy of collecting.

Collecting Treasures

It was one of those days. The air was crisp and cool and it felt like fall...I enjoyed every minute of it! I fit in as much as I possibly could so it was hard to decide what to write about....it was all so awesome!

But what get's top billing today is my love for all things wabi-sabi. I was inspired by and quite moved by a post called "Saturday...with some Wabi Sabi" by Philippa Stanton also known as 5ftinf.  She is one of my favorite artists and teachers.

As I was heading into church this morning I was quite taken with the bright and cheery hedge of zinnias along the rock wall.  But on closer look as I was heading home I was even more taken with were the spent blooms...the imperfect ones that we generally deadhead and discard.

Later in the afternoon I went back with a bag and a pair of clippers. To the average onlooker I was doing a public service...deadheading the spent blooms to tidy up the garden.  But in reality I was collecting treasures!

Source of Joy

I stopped in my tracks today when I came across this sweet autumn clematis along a neighbor's rock wall.

It's another late bloomer so is such a treat this time of year.

It took me right back to Connie's balcony garden where every spring  I would plant one in a pot in the corner.  To our delight it would take over the railing and was a daily source of joy for her...and that was a source of joy for me.

In 2014 we could hardly contain it.

The last several years we mixed it with moon flower coming from the other direction. We were even lucky enough to have timed it right to watch a few open in the early evening.

When Connie moved into a nursing room I blew up that 2014 view of her garden and hung it in her room.  You can read about it in this post called "Transition Project."  Her granddaughter now has that project....and hopefully it's a source of joy for her.

"Love Is In The Air"

I'm in a little bit of a song lyric phase...

"Love is in the air, everywhere I look around
Love it in the air, every sight and every sound...."
John Paul Young

One second it was there...the next it was something else.

And a little love on the on the work table....this one feels bright and playful. We'll see where it goes from here.

Napkin? or Art?

My niece Sandy commented that her family uses the same napkins as the one in the piece I've been working on.  It made me laugh out loud wondering how many people will recognize it.  I saw it as art....others are cleaning up during dinner with it.  We'll see.....

I added one more stripe strip on each side of the panel to give it more of a frame .....then bordered it with orange and yellow.
I chose olive polka dot fabric for the top and auditioned all kinds of ways to incorporate the napkin. What I liked best was using it vertically along the whole bottom section.  Because I wanted a more typical shape on this piece...not long and skinny....it wasn't conducive to multiple layers. That will be the next one.

Now it's time for stitching.  I don't think I'll do any on the napkin part...that already has enough texture. The bigger issue is there's real potential to really screw it up.  But I'm going with the texture thing.

This image is cropped to get the basic idea what it's going to look like.  Does it read napkin? or art?

"Dream a Little Dream"

"Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper 'I love you'
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me."  Gus Kahn

There's a large sycamore tree right outside the studio and dining room windows.  It's lovely all four seasons and is a huge source of joy for me.

Last fall I picked up a few pods that had fallen....and this is the only one that has held up.

From my studio window this morning I could see green orbs dangling from the tree...not unlike the pom poms in Copley Square.  When I went out to check it out I was thrilled to find a few on the ground.....seed pods make me giddy.

"Dream a little dream....."

Inspiration Napkin?

I picked up this one single napkin years ago at Crate and Barrel...or maybe it was Pier One.  I loved the colors and texture and knew there would be just the right moment to use it in a project.  Yes....I saw it as potential...not something to wipe my hands on.

It's going to be the inspiration for and a textural element in the next fabric piece.  I think the scheme is just luscious and goes nicely with the other pieces.  I actually think it starting to look like a little collection! Yay!

I'm sticking with the Kaffe stripe strips for a while longer because I know it will add cohesion to the show. I cut strips from the fabrics below and fused them together on release paper.

The panel peels right off and becomes a piece of new fabric....all nice and flat.  You can see the fusible glue on the back...all ready to attach to the other layers.

It think this napkin and and the fused stripes are a match made in heaven. Now I just need to figure out the rest.
