"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Junk Journal #2

Subtitle: Pink Things

I fully expected there would be snow in March.

But the truth is that snow isn't quite as magical on March 25th as it is on December 25th.

But it's still beautiful...and it won't last long.
Becky's second junk journal is a little chunkier....and the layered cover just kind of happened on its own.

Many years ago Becky gave me a stack of cards from her mom's stash. She knew I might have a use for them....some day. Roses were a favorite of Lucy's...and they certainly are a favorite of Becky. So I chose some cards rose cards from that stash and pink things ended up being a bit of a theme.

I didn't originally intend for these two rose cards to become the cover...but I loved the way they stacked up....so decided they deserved front and center. And that tiny black and white leaf peeking out makes me smile. It's on a card from David, Becky's husband.

Like the other one...this one has vintage stationary.....

greeting cards, an old cookbook cover, a couple of recognitions certificates for Becky's teaching, and lots of this and that.

And again, several places for her to add more this and that.

I love the way this velum rose card becomes the spine.

I enjoyed putting these two journals together....and we're thinking about doing a version of this for our group art exchange. We will iron out the details when I visit at the end of April.

  1. You got snow today???!

These junk journals are such a candy store of color, texture, layering, shapes, sizes, contrasts, cohering elements, surprises, and evocative delights. I am so impressed, MaryAnn.

    1. The snow actually came on the 24th....but yes...we got about 2 inches.

Thanks for all that validation on the junk journals. It's been an interesting journey and I'm thinking about all the ways it can be interpreted. And realizing how much fodder I have to make several hundred of these.

  2. These junk journals, more like memory journals, are really delightful, MaryAnn. Once again, you've got me thinking - about two shoeboxes filled with cards and notes from loved ones, stashed on a bookshelf. Hmmm....! Thanks for your constant joy and inspiration!

    1. I love when I get people thinking! I think it would be a wonderful way to save and honor some precious cards. An you could mix in some art work and blank pages to write stories and memories. It's really got me thinking to! It's a whole new thing for me!
