"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

You're never too old to enjoy children's books....I have several favorites.

I finished the children's book puzzle a few days ago...

and it got me thinking about The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry and the BIG HUNGRY BEAR. I don't know if it was more of a favorite of the boys...or of mine. I'd like to think it was both.

I think it actually came from grandma and grandpa...Margie and Dave.

It's there on the left in the finished puzzle...which by the way...was just a delight!

I love the long title of the book....the soft and whimsical illustrations...and the cadence of the story. It's a fun one to read outloud and I can pretty much recite it by heart. Still.

Hello, little mouse, What are you doing?
Oh, I see. Are you going to pick that red, ripe strawberry?

The narrator warns about the big hungry Bear....Ohhhh, how that Bear loves red, ripe strawberries!

There would be no way to protect it or hide it from the Bear....and the narrator has an ulterior motive.

Quick! There's only one way in the whole wide world to save a red, ripe strawberry from the big, hungry Bear!

Cut it in two.

  1. Thanks for sharing this story with US, MaryAnn! I have such strong, enduring, deeply cherished memories of being read to, and I LOVED reading to my kids and grandkids, and I LOVED teaching children with language-based learning disabilities to read.

As an adult, when others rush to the grocery story at word of a storm on the way, I always rush to the library—I'd sooner go without food than without books!

    1. I loved reading to my kids too. But the funny thing is...I have NO memories of my mom reading to me. I was the 7th of nine kids....and I guess there just wasn't time. I am a slow and somewhat reluctant reader as an adult....but am working on that.

I smiles at your comment you'd rather have books than food....and I have gleaned that from our many conversations.

  2. So many books in this puzzle are familiar to me from my daughter's childhood. I still love illustrated children's books and enjoy looking through them in book stores!

    1. Me too! I've been especially looking for them at thrift stores and the little free libraries that are around. I love the fact that they were loved by someone else.
