"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

I Love Circles

Jayne's #fabricrecipe challenge for today was "circles" and I had to answer the call....I love circles! I may not get anything else done if I keep this up.

Tips I've learned from the Water Soluble Magie class got me thinking about a technique  to try....and circles were the perfect thing to start with.

Since this is mostly my idea...I can briefly describe what I did....and who knows if it will make sense or not.  This whole process is still so mind boggling and magical....even while you're doing it.

Since the soluble fabric dissolves....I had an idea late last night on how to use it in a different way.  I used some of my tiny soluble fiber scraps and some warm water to make a glue slurry.  I rolled pieces of yarn around my fingers after soaking them in the slurry....and let them dry overnight. This morning they were firm little rings....and the bits of glue that were visible would dissolve later on in the process.

I was working on a piece of waxed paper....so I randomly laid some yarns down in the leftover glue just...just to see.  This morning these were stiff too and I could pick it right up....

...so I used it in the center of my project.

I recently found a hoop in my closet...and it's a game changer for machine stitching. I tried to stitch circles....but I'm such a lousy free motion stitcher that it all got a little wonky. But the best thing about this technique it doesn't matter all that much. In other projects I didn't stitch enough so the piece didn't hold together...and I probably overstitched on this one.  But I was too invested in it for it to fall apart...so I stitched around every circle several times. That wasn't necessary.....I'm still learning.

Before I stitched I added a few cut circles from pink painted sheer curtains for texture...and to give it another circle element. Here it's sitting in the warm water....I was tickled (pink) with the result. Phew!

I chose purple thread for the top....but my only regret is just going with the light gray that was already in the bobbin.  I wish I would have taken the time to wind a purple bobbin. I may flatten the piece back out at some point and display it flat.
Circle challenge.....✔
I most certainly will try this technique again....I have something already in my head.

  1. How creative you are, MaryAnn! You’ve taken off in a beautiful direction with these lessons. The mix of colors in this one is so soft and lovely. I’m just wondering if you ever sleep. 😁
