"I do believe in an everyday sort of magic...the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we're alone." Charles de Lint

Peace

"It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber."

Today was Margie's 91st Birthday.  The real party is Saturday, but Paul and I dropped by her apartment with a maple doughnut and a few gifts to mark this special day.

Having Margie in our lives on a regular basis these past several years has been one of our biggest joys.

As you enter Liz's condo.....we put together a Peace March Wall along one of the hallway walls.

Back in 1986  Liz walked across the country is the "Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament."  She was part of a group of 400 to 1000 (depending on the day) people who walked from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness of the dangers of nuclear weapons.  Liz wore out 5 pairs of shoes walking 3,700 miles through 15 states over the course of 9 months.

This Peace March had a huge impact on her life....so it seems fitting that Liz will walk by this wall every time she enters her home. And now she can visually share the story with anyone else who wants to know.

On the other side of the same hall is her pinter's drawer we hung a year ago.  But this year we added this blue shelf underneath.....and Liz will have fun finding more treasures to display.  Thinking about this sent the two sisters into the box of their Skipper dolls.....and watching them play for a little while with all the clothes and accessories was a wonderful moment of joy.

We also hung this photo collage I made for her a while back honoring the "hat she almost had."

The story about the significance of the Pittsberg Pirates and that hat can be found here:   https://joyfulputtering.blogspot.com/2021/11/the-hat-she-almost-had.html

The peace apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  Margie has been a peace advocate her whole life....and I often refer to her living room wall vignette as the Peace Wall. It features a poster with the quote at the top of this post....and wise words from Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.....and tells everyone who enters her home what is important to her and her hope for peace.

As I was looking back in the blog I came across a post  about helping Margie move to all one floor in in her last home and created the original Peace Wall:  https://joyfulputtering.blogspot.com/2016/02/punch-list.html  And I smiled when I saw the same dining room furniture Liz has now....and the same daunting long white walls.  I guess I've been helping the Shupe women rearrange their furniture for quite some time.
